Getting started
An AI language model wrote this guide. Tell us if anything here does not match what you see in the app.
The app does one job: it shows you where your family’s money goes. The basic loop has three steps. Get your receipts in, give each one a Category, then look at the Spending report.
1. Sign in
- Your invitation email opens the Welcome page. Choose a password there.
- After that, sign in on the Login page with your email and that password.
- If you forget your password, select Forgot password? on the Login page.
2. Add your receipts
There are three ways to add a receipt. Use whichever suits you.
- Email it. Forward a receipt email, or send a photo, to your Family Receipt Address. You find the address on the Profile page. This is the easiest way, and it works from your phone.
- Upload it. On the Receipts page, select Upload receipts and choose photos or PDFs.
- Type it in. When you have no image, select Create Manual Receipt and enter the merchant, amount and date.
The app reads the merchant, amount and date from each image.
Treat your Family Receipt Address like a password. Anyone who has it can add receipts to your family.
3. Check what the app read
- On the Receipts page, open a receipt to see its image next to what the app read. Fix anything that is wrong.
- A receipt with a flagged date needs a look. The date is in the future, or more than six weeks old. Correct it, or save it as it is.
4. Give each receipt a Category
- Pick a Category on the Receipts page or the Expenses page.
- A merchant can have a default Category. New receipts from that merchant then get it automatically.
5. See where the money went
- The Spending page totals your Expenses by Category.
- It groups the Categories into Groupings, and the Groupings into Areas of Importance.
Optional: check against your bank
You can skip this whole section. Your Expenses and Spending report are complete without it.
- Import your bank transactions. Download a CSV file of your transactions from your bank’s website. On the Transactions page, use Import Transactions, choose your bank, then choose the file.
- Reconcile. The Reconciliation page pairs each receipt with the bank transaction that paid for it. It is useful in two ways. A transaction with no receipt is a purchase you have not entered yet. A charge you do not recognise is worth a question to your bank.
Invite your family
- On the Profile page, select Invite Someone and enter their email address.
- They get an invitation email and join your family.
- Everyone in your family sees and can change all of your family’s receipts, expenses and transactions.
